Topic: The Art of the Traditional Boat
Many Adirondack works of art have boats in them; many boats can themselves be called works of art. Let’s explore the art of the traditional small boat in ALCA’s inaugural presentation of the Alfred Z. Solomon Lecture Series, June 29, 2025. Hallie Bond, former curator at the Adirondack Museum and author of Boats and Boating in the Adirondacks, will moderate a panel discussion and questions with the audience at 7:30 p.m. in the Art Center’s new home on Blue Mountain Lake. Hallie will be joined by Leigh Hornbeck and Everett Smith.
Hallie will start the discussion with an overview of Winslow Homer’s Adirondack boats. Homer painted many of his Adirondack scenes at what became the North Woods Club near Minerva. They include not only the famous Blue Boat, a guideboat, but dugouts and flatbottomed skiffs.
